E-WMS - Picking advice: serial/batch advice policy

Introduction

This document describes the E-WMS settings 'Batch: advice policy' and 'Serial: advice policy', available in several E-WMS module settings.

The description is based on product update 408.

For the advice setting 'S/B advice policy' until product update 407, please see this document.

Description

The settings 'Batch: advice policy' and 'Serial: advice policy' are used in E-WMS settings available through menu System, General, Settings in  following settings tabs:

  • WMS Fulfilment advice
  • WMS Replenishment
  • WMS Production Issues

These setting are part of the picking advice settings and allow you to configure, separate for batch- or serial number items, what serial/batch stock should be picked first. Typically, the oldest expiration dates would be selected first. In Exact Globe Next and E-WMS, a serial/batch end date can be left empty, a start date is always filled.

The settings 'Batch: advice policy' and 'Serial: advice policy' offer following choices:

  • End date or else start date
The oldest batches are selected by looking at the S/B end date.
For batches with an empty end date, end date '31-12-2299' is applied (so probably advised after batches with specific end date), and the start date is also applied now for these batches without end date.

    • Sample
batch B1    start date 01-01-13    end date 31-12-2014
batch B2    start date 01-02-13    end date 31-12-2014
batch B3    start date 01-12-12    end date (empty)
batch B4    start date 01-11-12    end date (empty)
batch B5    start date 01-12-11    end date 01-01-2015

      Advice generated (at 01-01-14):
For batches B3 and B4 end date '31-12-2299' is applied, and batch B4 will be advised first because of the older start date.
Order of advising these batches: B1, B2 (or: B2, B1 - since equal end date, will depend on location policy), B5, B4, B3

  • End date and also start date
The oldest batches are selected by looking at the combination of end date + start date.
In case you would produce batches with the same end date during an entire month, you will still advice the batches produced at first of the month, before batches produced by the end of the month.
An empty end date will be interpreted as '31-12-2299', so will be advised last.

    • Sample
batch B1    start date 01-01-13    end date 31-12-2014
batch B2    start date 01-02-13    end date 31-12-2014
batch B3    start date 01-12-12    end date (empty)
batch B4    start date 01-11-12    end date (empty)
batch B5    start date 01-12-11    end date 01-01-2015

      Advice generated (at 01-01-14):
For batches B3 and B4 end date '31-12-2299' is applied.
Order of advising these batches: B1 (since older start date than B2), B2, B5, B4, B3

  • End date
Stock is selected by the S/B end date. An empty end date is regarded as '31-12-2299', so will be advised last.

    • Sample
batch B1    start date 01-01-13    end date 31-12-2014
batch B2    start date 01-02-13    end date 31-12-2014
batch B3    start date 01-12-12    end date (empty)
batch B4    start date 01-11-12    end date (empty)
batch B5    start date 01-12-11    end date 01-01-2015

      Advice generated (at 01-01-14):
For batches B3 and B4 end date '31-12-2299' is applied.
Order of advising these batches: B1, B2 (or: B2, B1 - since equal end date, will depend on location policy), B5, B3, B4 (or B4, B3 - depending location policy)

  • Start date
Stock is selected by the S/B start date.

    • Sample
batch B1    start date 01-01-13    end date 31-12-2014
batch B2    start date 01-02-13    end date 31-12-2014
batch B3    start date 01-12-12    end date (empty)
batch B4    start date 01-11-12    end date (empty)
batch B5    start date 01-12-11    end date 01-01-2015

      Advice generated (at 01-01-14):
      Order of advising these batches: B5, B4, B3, B1, B2

Remarks

  • When 'Advice' for S/B items is enabled, a serial/batch advice policy is always applied first, before other advise policies. It is possible to disable the S/B advice, then all stock is regarded equal for that item. Disabling 'Advice: serial numbers' may be advisable when picking serial number items without specific expiration date.

  •
  • When a S/B number was explicitly entered in the sales order (or production issue) line, only this S/B number will be advised; other S/B numbers will not be advised for that order line.

  • Available stock for serial/batch items may be limited when a debtor has limited 'external shelf life'

  • Currently order-specific stock (like S/B number entered in an order line, or external shelf life requirements) is not supported when using E-WMS Replenishment, to replenish stock order-based (except in a specific scenario).

  • When working with E-WMS Pick & Pack, then the primary picking advice (including S/B selection) is generated by the replenishment process. This means that order-specific stock (see above) is also not supported in the Pick&Pack process.

  • When 'picking advice' is disabled, from release 408 the pre-entered S/B will still be send to the scanner as 'advice' (but to the item default location, without checking stock). In earlier releases, the S/B number would still be empty on the scanner in this case.

  • Blocked and expired batches are always disregarded.

  • When the location policy 'pick locations only' is enabled, then older batches (which should be shipped first) on bulk locations would also be disregarded.
